TV Mounts for RV, Trailers & Motorhomes

Many campers do not do without the daily TV program even on the slopes and get a special camping TV. There’s no question about it: watching TV while on the road is comfortable. But it also poses a number of challenges. First and foremost: the omnipresent lack of space. Interior space in recreational vehicles is usually severely limited. That’s why you need to think carefully about where to mount the TV.

With the right TV mount, it is possible to make the most of the available interior space. However, there are also some points that should be taken into account for unadulterated TV enjoyment.

What TV mounts are available for caravans and motorhomes?

There is now a whole range of different TV mounts for caravans and motorhomes available on the market from specialist camping dealers. The most common model types are:

  • Rigid TV mount: simple mounts that are fixed in place. Inexpensive, but not so flexible. Some models are height adjustable, after all.
  • Rotating/swiveling TV mount: this popular form of TV mount allows for a good view from many directions. Some are also available for sloped surfaces.
  • Side-extending TV mount: This allows for mounting in cabinets. The TV is pulled out of the cabinet when needed.
Partially overlapping models include side-extending mounts that also rotate. Another alternative is monitor mounts or tablet mounts if there is no space at all available for a conventional camping TV inside the vehicle.

Where is the best place to fix the TV mount?

The 1-million-euro question: Where is the best place to attach the TV mount? Unfortunately, there is no standard answer to this question, as camping vehicles differ too greatly from one another. However, as mentioned above, the first thing to do is to weigh up viewing angles, available space and safety aspects and then find a compromise.

Some options are:

Cabinets

Cabinets or sideboards are a good option for mounting a TV mount, as you can store the TV in them after use to save space. The prerequisite is that the TV is the right size and the cabinet is sturdy enough. Many camping furniture are already reinforced and are suitable for attaching TV mounts. If this is not the case, be sure to attach a reinforcing board, such as a plywood board. The board should have a thickness of at least 15 mm and an edge length of 25 cm.

Ceiling

At first glance, the ceiling sounds like a good place to mount a TV, as it takes up almost no space when folded. However, it is important to check (preferably by a specialist workshop) whether the ceiling is really stable enough for the TV’s tractive force.

Walls

Here, too, the following applies: Have it checked whether the wall can withstand the additional load. Experts tend to advise against mounting a TV mount on walls and ceilings. However, the manufacturer may have a specially reinforced mounting location for exactly this purpose. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer or a specialist workshop.

Purchase Criteria TV mount for RV

Watching TV in a caravan or motorhome is usually a compromise, as there simply isn’t as much space as in the living room at home. It is important to consider the following three factors and then find the right balance:

  • Optimal viewing angle
  • Possibility of mounting
  • Safety

Let’s take a look at this in detail!

Optimal viewing angle

As we all know, watching television is a way to relax. However, if you constantly have to turn your head or do other contortions to see the picture, it will be difficult to switch off. That’s why you should think about where you’re going to install the TV beforehand. The optimal viewing angle (angle of the viewer to the TV) for TVs is 20 – 30 °. The seating distance should be two to three times the screen diagonal. Try to get as close as possible to these values, but don’t despair if it doesn’t work out 100%. There is just not that much space in the caravan.

Possibility for mounting

TV mounts for camping vehicles can be attached at various points. Popular are, for example, TV mounts that can be pulled out to the side, with which you can pull the TV out of a cabinet. You can be creative here and think of all the places where you could mount the TV, taking into account the available space. However, do not only pay attention to the place of the TV, but also take into account where the sockets are located and where the antenna cables end.

Safety

This point is extremely important: not all places are equally suitable for mounting a TV bracket. Walls and ceilings may be too thin to safely support a heavy TV. Here you need to check carefully and possibly compare the load capacity and weight of the mount and TV. Also, make sure that the TV mount has a transport lock. This will prevent the TV from coming loose during travel and starting to swing wildly back and forth.

Installing mobile home TVs correctly in six steps

The installation of the camper TVs turns out to be very simple. You can do it in six steps and need very little technical knowledge.

  1. Choose a suitable place. Make sure that the unit is securely placed and not exposed to direct sunlight. The image should be easily viewed from all seating areas in the RV.
  2. Attach the base to the TV set. The material needed for this is enclosed. The attachment is different for each unit. Refer to the instruction manual for details.
  3. Insert the batteries into the remote control. The batteries for the remote control are included.
  4. Insert the antenna into the designated port. Which is the DVB-T2 port if you want to use terrestrial antenna TV, or the DVB-C port if you have a satellite system.
  5. For paid channels, you must also insert a special card in the CI+ module. If you want to do this, make sure that there is a corresponding slot during the test.
  6. Connect the power adapter. First, plug the jack plug into DC connector of the device. Then connect the classic plug to a 220V outlet.
