How do I choose an oil filter for my Honda Ridgeline?
The choice of an oil filter is most often a hot topic during the scheduled maintenance. When you change the oil in your Honda Ridgeline, it is necessary to select the right oil filter.
Two easy ways to select an oil filter for the Honda Ridgeline
Oil filter selection can be done in two ways. The first option is to remove the factory filter in your Honda Ridgeline and buy a counterpart of that filter.
The second option: perform an oil filter selection by car brand, considering the modification and year of manufacture of your Honda Ridgeline.
All oil filters are divided into two main types:
- Spin-on oil filter, which is screwed directly onto the engine block. A spin-on filter contains all the components of an oil filter.
- Cartridge Oil Filter is a filter element that fits in a special recess in the engine block. The Cartridge is just a filter element, and the valves are mounted in the engine block.
Anyway, regardless of the type of oil filters, the whole oil filtration system (Spin-on filter or insert + valves in the engine block) consists of a number of components, each of which must meet a number of requirements:
- The oil filter housing must provide a tight and reliable threaded connection, and must be protected from corrosion for specified service life.
- Spin-on filter seal (insert socket cover) – ensures tightness of the threaded joint at maximum oil pressure. Sleeve – the frame on which the filter media (the so-called corrugator) is held.
- The filter media is the corrugated filter screen itself. Together with the sleeve forms a “filter element” (the filter insert is, in fact, such a replacement filter element). The main characteristics of the filter media are filtering (purifying) capacity, flow capacity, and absorption capacity (dirt holding capacity).
- Anti-drain valve – prevents oil from flowing out of the filter when the engine is not running, so that when the engine is started the oil gets to the friction pairs as quickly as possible.
- By-pass valve – to prevent oil starvation of engine (due to impassability of filter), breakthrough or crumpling (crumpling) of corrugator opens the way for direct flow of oil bypassing the filter element. The oil filter by-pass valve must open when the engine starts or when there is a sudden increase in oil pressure (for example, a sudden increase in rpm to overtake).
Selection of the oil filter for the Honda Ridgeline by the quality of filtration.
When evaluating it, two parameters are distinguished:
- Nominal filtration. It provides particle retention of up to 95%;
- Absolute filtration. The passport degree of engine oil purification does not exceed 5 microns.
We recommend buying an oil filter from a reputable manufacturer, which has a high quality of filtration.
